“My grandma always said that we should take great care of our ‘aina. With taro (kalo) as the foundation of these lands, all I am is just a simple taro farmer. I got the hands, got the aloha, and all I want is to plant and be pono."
Keoki “Kaloman” Fukumitsu,
7th Generation Taro Farmer

Born and raised in Hakipu’u, Windward Oahu, our family’s dream has always been to preserve the lo’i (fields) in taro.  For seven generations, our family has been the konohiki (stewards) of the majority of these native lands, which are dedicated to taro.  While producing some of the highest yields of taro for the island, we have also welcomed thousands of students and volunteers to our fields to see firsthand how taro is harvested and to learn the cultural and environmental importance in keeping these lands in taro and preserving these lands from the uplands to the sea or ahupua’a.
